Year 2 Goings On
On Wednesday 6th January, year 2 went on a trip into Woking on the public bus. It was so much fun going on the bus and the children chatted happily all the way there. When we arrived, we walked through Woking to see the Martian sculpture, pod and prints in circles on the ground. The children thought it was amazing! After that we made our way to The Lightbox and learnt all about how Woking has changed through time, as well as looking at paintings by the artist Cyril Mann.
Back in school, the children made their own Martian sculptures using junk modelling materials. The children needed to design and make a tripod Martian that could stand up. When they had completed them, they painted them metallic colours. They looked great!
As part of our topic on our local area and nature, we went outside to listen to and look for signs of birds. We looked at real bird nests and then designed and created our own. Every nest was different, but all of them stayed together when we picked them up! We thought carefully about the natural materials we could use and how we could successfully connect them.
The Gingerbread Man
In year 2 we have begun the year with a mini topic on The Gingerbread Man. The children enjoyed taking on the roles of the characters in the story and worked in groups to create their own play to show to the rest of the class. The children used lovely, loud voices and thought about what the characters would say and how they would be feeling.
Thinking about Numbers!
This week in our maths lessons we have been doing lots of practical activities using equipment to make numbers and then partition them into tens and ones. It has been fun using the equipment and we have demonstrated a really good understanding of number to Mrs Lister. She was very impressed with us!
Oh, we do like to be beside the seaside!
To support our geography topic, ‘Oh I do Like to be Beside the Seaside’, Year 2 went on a trip to Littlehampton Beach. The children built sandcastles, dug holes and enjoyed collecting water from the sea. After lunch, they all had an ice cream and went into the sea for a paddle – everyone got very wet due to all the splashing around, but we all thoroughly enjoyed it! What a brilliant day it was!
Eggs & Chicks & Ducks
For our science topic on animals, a lovely parent lent us their incubator and provided us with chick and duck eggs. We were extremely excited to see two of the ducklings hatching live! We had three ducklings and two chicks, although, unfortunately, one chick didn’t survive. The chick and ducks will be back to visit at the Summer Fair so we can’t wait to see what they look like now!
During our animal themed Book Week, we had a visit from Basil and Crew with their gorgeous farm animals! The children loved stroking, feeding and brushing the animals and particularly enjoyed feeding the lambs their milk – the lambs were so strong!
